Pre-Blog and a Challenge

Hey you,

I want to blog.  I don’t even know what that means anymore. It’s not the way it used to be in 2003 when you just opened a LiveJournal account, invited your friends, and blabbed about whatever you wanted. That was pre-social media (yes, kids, there was a time…). It basically WAS the social media. I even found my LJ post about when I decided to give the ol’ Facebook a try in 2007, because it seemed fun… But these days you need to be fancy. These days my cat kinda has his own Facebook page, and it’s not actually that weird to say such a thing.

I’m currently taking a 2-session course entitled “Creating Compelling Content” at my local college to try to figure some of this out. I have some great ideas, and some homework – focus my topic. Ugggghhhh!!  I spent several hours this afternoon trying to find tips about how to do just that, and after crying on my bf’s shoulder for a few mins in defeat, I decided that what I need to do right now is just write. There are so many things that I want to write about that I am not ready to give up on until I do a little searching… Wonderful potential topics include highlights such as:

  • Movies (I was a film major, so duh)
    • Making and writing them!
    • Watching them!
    • Loving or hating them!
  • TV shows
    • What I currently watch (Jane the Virgin, Supergirl, The Flash, Game of Thrones, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, etc)
  • Books
    • Reading them!
    • Writing them!
    • Publishing them!
  • Board Games
    • What I love!
    • What I hate!
    • Creating a new card game with my bf, and publishing it!
  • Life as a 30-something, child-free, divorced immigrant
    • Dating in your 30s
    • Finding love again (it’s possible!)
    • Not having kids, for a reason
    • Rediscovering ‘home’
  • Picking up the pieces after a house fire (yep, that happened)
  • Life in California
  • Being a Canadian born and raised, no longer amongst her fellow Canucks
  • Life with 2 (soon to be 3) cats, and one hamster
  • Beer and wine and coffee and tea
    • What’s awesome, what’s gross
    • Pub Trivia!
  • Trying to lose weight and be healthy
    • Eat less/better!
    • Exercise more!
  • Makeup/Fashion
  • And so much more…

So, you see… I have a lot brewing on my mind. It’s ok if I don’t focus right away, and don’t figure out my ideal target until later in the process. I want to call this my pre-blog. The blog I use to figure it out before really diving in (and of course, that means that now I’m diving in).

500wordssq-150x150In the meantime, I’ve signed myself up for a 500 words-a-day challenge to get the ball rolling over the next 31 days. And seriously, this IS a challenge for me. For crying out loud, sometimes I don’t even remember to flip my page-a-day calendar… But here I am, declaring that beginning today, April 11th, 2016, I’m going to write 500 words a day for the next 31 days. And thus completes today’s challenge;  commit to the plan and announce it.

For reference, here are a few of my favourite links on the topic of focusing your blog content, found while scouring the web for ideas, and failing at it. I haven’t completed the exercises yet (lol, obviously).

For Myself

I recently accessed my LiveJournal account again after a few years of not blogging, and several days of trying to hack in. I opened that blog in 2003, and though I didn’t go that far back in my rediscovery (after also finding three other blogs that I’d forgotten), I did learn something; I’m basically the same person I’ve always been, going through the same kinds of daily struggles with love and relationships, appreciation and gratitude, purpose and motivation, and the pursuit of happiness. Heck, if we really want to throw it back, just replace this teddy bear with a cat and here I am… the same old Daph.

Here’s to another step in the journey.
